WARTIME STREET GAMES WITH MISS DAVIDSON (Former
AHT of Hurlford Primary)
Report by Erin and Andrew, P7
On the 7th November 2005, we had a visit from Miss Davidson. She
is a woman who was alive during WWII. She taught us some games that
she played during her childhood. She told us that all of these games
were played in the streets. Things were different then as there were
so few cars so children were able to run freely across roads and streets
when playing with their friends.
One of the first games was tig, a game in which you run about and
tig people (touch them with your hand). There are all different types
of tig, one of which is 'wounded tig'. In 'wounded tig' whichever part
of the body is tug, you have to hold while you are running.
Next she showed us how to choose the leader of a game. One of the
ways is called 'one potato, two potato'. There are all different songs
but we only had time to learn a few.
Next we played some singing games. Our favourite was called 'my
laddie sailor'. Then we played some street games, called 'Red Rover'.
In this game you have to break through the barrier of arms made by
the other team. Then there was a 'statues' game in which someone chose
a certain number of people and told them which type of statue they
had to make (eg funny, scary etc) and the winner was chosen.
Our best game was called 'Kick the Can' where a team of chasers must
try to catch the runners and put them in a circle. To free all the
people who have been caught a team member who is still free has to
try and kick the can which is in the middle of the circle.
Finally we played a game where a tennis ball was put inside a stocking
and say rhymes and swing the ball from side to side against the wall
- not as easy as it sounds!
These games were extremely enjoyable and fun to play. Miss Davidson
must have had a great time playing these games when she was wee. And
nearly sixty years later, the games are still as much fun!! |
