East Ayrshire's war: Lauren's gran (text)

Name: Sarah McBeth

My gran lived in Long Park, Kilmarnock and lots of decent, friendly people and families lived there and they all helped each other during the war.

My gran, Sarah McBeh met my papa 2 years into the war. Then he got called away to Egypt as part of the R.A.F (the Royal Air Force). he did not fight or drop bombs, all he done was help all the planes load up on fuel and other things. While my papa was away my gran missed him terribly and was worried incase she never seen im again.

My gran and her family had to go with their ration book to receive their limited amount of food.

My gran said that she never liked rationing because the fruit, vegetables, butter and the powdered eggs were hardly ever fresh because all the factories were had been shut to make war materials. Everyone had a bad diet due to lack of fresh food. It was a big treat if shops got fresh food and big queues would form but there was only a limited amount sp it was first come first served.

My gran's parents had blackout curtains. She hated it when they had to use them because it was really dark and you could not see a thing.

At the end of the war my Papa came returned and met back with my Gran. Two years later they got married.
