East Ayrshire's war: Mrs K Murphy transcript part 2 (text)

Did you have any evacuees living with you?

I had no evacuees living with me but the evacuees came in a train and lived in the Parochial Hall.

What did evacuees take in their suitcase?

Evacuees had a small suitcase that had very little in it. It contained 2 changes of clothes, a tooth brush and perhaps a small toy.

How did you feel when the air raid sirens went off?

I wasn’t really scared because there wasn’t really many bombs dropped in Kilmarnock. On the way back form Glasgow the Germans dropped bombs in the Dean Park to get away faster. It was a horrible sound when the bombs went off.

Where did you hide when the sirens went off?

We didn’t have a hiding place. Not all of us did have somewhere to hide.

Did you ever have to use a gas mask?

No, but while I was working in the ACS we had to train wearing a gas mask. It wasn’t really that bad.
