Lorna Milligan of
Golspie remembers exactly what she was doing when war
was declared
Where
were you when the war started?
I was having a late
breakfast on the Sunday morning and I remember I was sitting
eating a boiled egg. I can remember that as clear as can
be, sitting having a boiled egg and the news came over
the wireless because, of course, there was no televisions
or anything. And there was no electric because it was
just a battery wireless and it came over, Mr Chamberlain
announced that we were at war with Germany. And we got
very frightened because we thought the Germans were round
the corner. But that was where I was: at home, having
my breakfast. Very clear, that is, very clear.
