Willie Sutherland
talks about alternative school lessons
What
was the school like during the war?
It was just
pretty well normal, just, there was no difference when
the war came. They just, ye got the strap just the same
if ye did something wrong. No, there was no, the only
difference was, there was a slogan came out, 'Dig for
Victory' and a farmer arrived wi' two horses and he dug
up part o' our playground and there was potatoes planted
in it and we'd till go out and plant them, so it was much
better than Geography or History, out planting potatoes.
And then, later on in the season, ye'd to go out and lift
them all, ye know. So apart from that, it was pretty much
the same, ye know, yeah.
