Atomic bomb (transcript)
Highland memoirs WW2: Atomic bomb (transcript) : WW2 veteran Mr Sutherland talks about the war in the Pacific and the atomic bomb
Mr Sutherland

At first we were talking about a world war, and there was a big war going on in the Pacific with the Japanese. Many of the boys from Inverness were captured by the Japanese and I know a few of them that were in prisoner of war camps there and the conditions were appalling and of course the far east war was always conducted by the Americans themselves. They were strong enough to beat the Japanese .We did help after Germany was defeated and a lot of our soldiers came back after the war and all of our planes were altered to fly from Burma and India and two weeks before we were due to leave, the atomic bomb was dropped and I was very pleased for the atomic bomb because it meant I wouldn’t have to leave home again after being away for five years and I could go back home with my mother and father and live a normal life.
