Some of the children were evacuated from the
cities because that’s where they thought the bombs were coming to,
and when the fighter bombers came over a lot of children from the cities
in Scotland were evacuated up here to the Highlands. Some of these children
came from Glasgow. They were very young and were taken away from their
parents, mums and dads, grannies and granddads, brothers and sisters and
they went to a strange place and they didn’t know when they were
coming, and arrived in Inverness station with a label round their neck
with a few bits and pieces in their case and some of them were put to
farms to work and to stay, and some of them weren’t very well treated
you know? They were sort of, made to work. Some of them were very young
and frightened so it wasn’t a very happy trip for these children
that were evacuated.
