Clothes would be passed down through the families,
maybe an old jumper that your Mum or Granny had knitted. It would be pulled
back if it didn’t fit and knitted up again to fit either your brothers
or sisters. We shared all our books, all our clothes, if it was an old
skirt or anything like that it would be cut up and made into a new dress
if you were going somewhere special. There was nothing at all wasted.
Any bottles and jars were taken back to the shop and we made a penny for
them. Absolutely everything was kept and saved. If you got a parcel, you
flattened out the paper, and you folded it up and put it into a drawer
to keep it safe and you saved all of the string. And it’s just something
we did. You know everything, absolutely everything was kept and you just
had to use it and reuse it and recycle.
