Men away(transcript)
Highland memoirs WW2: Men away (transcript) : Mrs Sheila Mackay talks about how most men where away from home during the war
Mrs Sheila MacKay

My dad and my mum’s brothers were all away to the war. So I don’t remember seeing my dad until I was about 7 or 8 years old when he came home. He was over in the Middle East, in Egypt most of the time. But we hardly saw any men because at the time men were away, except a few older men. We hardly knew what our fathers looked like except from seeing them in a photo, because we didn’t see them all the time we were growing up so when they came home they were strangers and some of us, if we saw a solider that was near by or home on leave we always wondered if it was our father because we didn’t really know what our fathers looked like, so we thought that every man in a soldiers suit was dad.
