Aug 4th Anne Frank and her family arrested by the Gestapo in Amsterdam.
Jan 22nd Allied landings at Anzio, south of Rome.
Feb 15th Fighting around Monte Cassino until May.
Mar 22nd Japanese invaded India.
May 11th Allies attacked the German Gustav Line defences south of Rome.
Spring/Summer ‘Salute the Soldier Weeks’ held all over Scotland.

National Savings Campaign: The Lanarkshire target was to raise £1,250,000 to maintain an Infantry Brigade for one year.
Jun 4th Rome liberated.
Jun 6th D-Day – Allied forces landed in Normandy, France.
Jun 13th First German ‘flying bomb’ attack on Britain (V1).
Jun Japanese Army defeated at Kohima in India.
Jul 20th Hitler survived an assassination plot bomb at his headquarters.
Jul 24th Soviet troops liberated the concentration camp at Majdanek in Poland.
Aug 1st Polish Home Army staged an uprising in Warsaw against the German forces (but has to surrender October 2nd).
Aug 15th Allied forces land in southern France to open a new front against the Germans.
Aug 17th British Army completed liberation of India and advanced into Burma.
Aug 25th Paris liberated.
Sep 2nd Allies advanced in Italy north of the Gothic Line.
Sep 3rd Brussels, Belgium, liberated.
Sep 8th First V2 rocket attack on Britain.
Sep 11th British troops crossed into Holland.
Sep 17 26th Airborne landings and Battle of Arnhem in Holland.
Oct 4th Allied forces land in Greece.
Oct 14th Athens liberated.
Nov 12th ‘The Tirpitz’ is sunk in Tromso fjord, Norway, by Allied planes.
Dec 16th-27th German counter-offensive in the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge).
