Jan 26th Auschwitz concentration camp liberated by Soviets.
Feb 4th 11th Yalta Conference – Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt met.
Feb 13th Dresden destroyed by a firestorm after Allied bombing raids.
Mar 7th Allies captured Cologne.
Mar 20th British army re-took Mandalay in Burma.
Mar 23rd Allied forces crossed the Rhine.
Apr 13th Belsen concentration camp liberated by British troops.
Apr 12th President Roosevelt died. Harry S Truman became US President.
Apr 16th Soviet troops began the final assault on Berlin.
Apr 19th Allied offensive in northern Italy. Venice liberated.
Apr 28th Mussolini captured and executed by Italian partisans.
Apr 29th Dachau camp liberated by US troops.
Apr 30th Hitler committed suicide in Berlin.
May 2nd German forces in Italy surrendered; British and Russian forces met on the Baltic.
May 3rd British Army recaptured Rangoon, Burma.
May 5th Copenhagen, Denmark, liberated.
May 6th British army entered Austria.
May 7th Unconditional surrender of all German forces agreed.
May 8th VE Day.
Jun 5th Allies divided up Germany and Berlin into Occupation Zones, and took over administration.
Jun 10th Australian troops landed in Borneo.
Jun 26th United Nations Charter signed at a San Francisco conference.
Jul 16th Potsdam Conference began in Berlin; Truman, Churchill and Stalin.
Jul 26th Clement Attlee succeeded Winston Churchill as Prime Minister.
Aug 6th First atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
Aug 9th Second atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki.
Aug 14th Japan’s unconditional surrender .
Aug 15th VJ Day.
Oct 24th United Nations organisation came into being.
Nov 20th War Crimes Trials begin in Nuremberg.
