School children interview Mr and Mrs Paterson about school during the war

What were schools like?

Sarah: The schools were not that different from today, more basic, there is a lot more freedom in school nowadays to what we had as children but as far as lessons were concerned we practically never left the classroom, We went into our classroom in the morning and that was you until the bell rang at 4pm.

John: There was always a big divide between the boys and the girls, the boys had a playground and toilet on one side and the girls were on the other. They didn’t mix much, other than at the front of the school were they have played tig or whatever, but they didn’t have anything like computers just books, but still enjoyed my life at school.

Sarah: I would say it was the best days of our lives

John: We knew nothing else really we didn’t go home and watch television.
