How did you know the
war was over?
John:
Well, a wee birdie told us it was over, Actually I can’t
remember exactly how we knew but we were told it was a big
day for us when we were told as a t the time I was working
as an Instructor instructing young Flight Engineers coming
through , and we got word that the war had ended so of course
we just stopped , everything stopped, and we went to the
town , Nottingham, on VE Day a lot of the people got drunk
and had a good time round the square in Nottingham. On VJ
Day it was more or less the same we carried on as normal
from VE to VJDay the end of the Japanese war, it was party
after party. After VJ Day, I had another year or so in the
air force until your time was up so we always had plenty
to do.
Sarah:
Well I’ll tell you exactly how I heard I can remember
as if it was yesterday what I was doing at that particular
moment. I was driving my ambulance during the day, I was
standing by, we had to be there with our Ambulance and if
anything happened you were called upon to do what ever duty
it was. From the house we were billeted at we went to Cameron
Barracks to standby with our Ambulance what I was ding that
day I was driving my ambulance out to Cameron Barracks I
would have a medic with me and I was going up this road
and I noticed the flag was flying at full mast and I literally
shouted, look the war’s over the flag is flying and
that was terrific and that night we went into the town Inverness,
and danced that night away. Dancing was our past time we
danced way into the early hours, and it was great fun.
