| Could
you explain what the ATS is?
Jean:
Well its just like the soldiers you would go out on parade
hey were very strict you had to been in on time at night
or you got in trouble, but I enjoyed it.
Teresa: So
what exactly did you do
Jean:
I did the cooking, I was a cook. I got my face burnt at
5 o’clock in the morning, my hair was all burnt, the
cook who was on the night before had left the oven on and
we couldn’t find out where the gas was coming from,
we could smell it, but me nosy parker, I opened the oven
door and stuck head in the oven door and said well here
where the gas is, next thing I knew I was at the other side
of the cookhouse al my hair was burnt off, my eyelashes,
I didn’t even know I was burnt it happened so quick.
So they sent me round to one
of the officers and they took me to the hospital and when
I went in thy took all the blisters of , all my face, that
put this hard brown stuff and was told to keep it on until
the face heals, but I’ve never had a mark, when I
looked in the mirror I thought what am I going to do, so
I was in hospital quite a while, but I was told when I went
in they would do their best not to leave a mark on my face,
but this brown stuff was so hard it was like brick on my
face I had it on for weeks, until it started o come off
itself then my face was all red so they gave me a tub of
cream which I had to put on everyday. But no mark on my
face, but I’ll never forget it. 5.30 in the morning.
Teresa: Well
it would certainly wake you up jean!
Jean:
My friend always says ‘You’ve been through a
lot Jean but you just have to come through it. |
