The War in West Lothian newsreel [part 3]

Linlithgow Palace. It’s good to see that even in these modern times, this ancient stronghold offers safety and support to its civilians.

‘Take cover at once! Take your gas mask with you wherever you go. If there is gas, you will be warned by the sound of hand rattles. That means you must put on your gas mask at once. The moment you hear the alarm, get ready to go to the shelter in your house or near it. Lay in some fire fighting gear. Get some elementary first aid kit, just in case you require it. Get to know who your air raid warden is and exactly how you can find him or her. This is vital. If anything happens, you must report it at once to him or her so that it can properly be dealt with.’

And there’s little Jeanie, a light in the dark keeping up the moral and the spirits.

And that spirit wasn’t to be vanquished, as victory for the allies was inevitable. And the day that everyone hoped for finally arrived. Victory in Europe was declared on the 8th May 1945. Far from the sunny splendour and street celebrations in London, West Lothian too celebrated, in it’s own unique way. Peace at last.
