We will remember them : Ailsa Munro, Land Army (text & image)
Ailsa Munro was in the land army during the war because she did not pass a medical that would have let her go into other the services. This meant she had to travel to Portmahomack and live in a hostel and then travel out to the nearby farms to work. The hostel was the building that is now known as the OysterCatcher hotel.

One of the farms she went to was Drumancroy where she met and eventually married one of the farmer’s sons.

One good thing about being in the land army was she had a plentiful supply of fresh milk, fresh eggs, chicken, butter and honey compared to other people who were on rations.

She had to do all the work that a farm worker would have done before but her favourite time of year was at harvest time. It was a very difficult job and at times dangerous. At one point Ailsa got her foot stuck down a huge drum and if her friend had not been holding onto her she would have fallen right in and been injured or killed.

Her salary in the land army was ten shillings one penny. She was in land army for four and a half years.
