Family life [part 3]
Did you have a toilet?
Jess: Yes I had an indoor toilet but we didn’t have a toilet roll. We just had newspaper in squares with a piece of string in it.
I didn’t mind not having things because I felt lucky having the things I had.
Devina: We had an indoor toilet and bathroom. Every window had blackout curtains.

How old were you when cars first appeared?
Norman: There were always cars but there were very few of them. Now my father had a motorcar it was very unusual. He had a Hillman it had been made in the 1930’s .The windscreen was vertical and it was a square sort of car. It was only later that they got aerodynamic. I was always used to motorcars but there weren’t many so you could go anywhere by car as there were no traffic congestion.

What did your mum and dad do?
Norman: Well my father was a welder and that was a reserved occupation so he wasn’t in the forces because it was important for people like that to be working in Britain for the war effort.
