Aberdeen
and the war [part 1]
|
What did you do in the war?
Devina:
I was working at Richards. I got 8 shilings (40p). I got dermatitis
in my hands and face.
Jess: I
was busy raising 3 children so I didn’t do anything,
but my husband was in the RAF. He was a Brylcream Boy. He
started off at Warrington and when it ended he was in Northern
Ireland.
Were you around when bombs struck?
Jess and Devina: One
shop in George street had all its windows blown out and had
a sign up saying “MORE OPEN THAN EVER”. The sense
of humor was good. You had to have a laugh at something. Two
areas were badly bombed - Hall Russel Ship Yard and Loch Street.
Also a German plane exploded into the ice rink being built
at Garthdee.
What did you do for entertainment?
Devina: I
went to musicals and I liked to walk up the carpet, down the
mart. I liked to walk on the beach but you could only walk
so far because of barbed wire. ’Up the carpet, down
the mart’ was when you walked up Union St. and came
down the other side.
