Life during the war [part 1]
How did you cope in the war?
Jess: You had to cope. I presumed we coped well because we got through it.
Devina: I hope we never see another war.

Did you have a pet?
Jess: No pets. It was hard enough looking after ourselves.

What kind of food did you eat?
Devina and Jess: We were never hungry. We had a good quality diet, healthy - sweeties were like gold. My favourite was hazelnut chocolate made by Duncans.
Jess: My favourite was Frys cream dark chocolate and you could get candy and walnut whips (even though they are a quarter of the size they used to be) for 2 old pence.
John: It was all rationed. We still got our mince and tatties, fish and chips- plenty of fish. Most of my family were on the trawlers.

How did you get money for food?
Betty: I had to work for it [laughs] but then it was rationed you could only buy so much food because you had to have a ration book
Jess: I only got my husband forces wages in a pension book .There was no childrens allowance till after the war, no bank accounts either.
Devina: On Friday we gave 1 old penny to the teacher and she wrote it down in a little green book. After you saved GBP 1.00 you got a big green book.
