Life
during the war [part 2]
|
What
did you do for entertainment?
Betty: The entertainment was at the school when we were at
school. Because we lived in the country we couldn’t
afford to go anywhere.
Did you have any illnesses
during the war?
Norman: I believe I had some of the childhood illnesses. I
had measles. At the time people just accepted that children
got these. You were ill for a while and then you got over
it. That was the way to protected yourself in adulthood. We
were immunized against whooping cough and diphtheria I think
and I didn’t think I had mumps. I’ve never suffered
from any major illnesses since.
What was it like during the
black outs?
Betty: Well I ran into a lamppost once during the blackout.
Was it sore?
Betty: Yes, I had two black eyes and a black and blue nose.
What did your mum say when
you got home?
Betty: Well I had to explain what happened to her.
Was she angry?
Betty: Not really, because she knew what it was like during
The Blackout.
Devina: We went to concrete shelters at the bottom of our
gardens. We half covered torches with paper so the light would
not shine up.
Jess: The concrete shelters were later made into houses and
sheds. |
