Seaton Primary school children interview local women, Amy and Ina, about life during the war [part 1]

What is your name and how old were you when the war started?
Amy: My name is Amy and I was brought up on Westburn Rd, I was 15 when war broke out.
Ina: My name is Ina and I was brought up in Inverness. I was 24 when war broke out.

What was your job?
Amy: I worked in a big store, Esslemont and MacIntosh.
Ina: I worked in the Calvin restaurant in Inverness.

Did you grow your own vegetables?
Amy: Yes.
Ina: No, we lived in a tenement, but my brother did his garden.

Anybody you know get evacuated?
Amy: No.
Ina: Nobody got evacuated.

How hard was it to get food?
Amy: Very, very hard to get food.
Ina: Everything was rationed… very little food but enough to keep us going.

Can you remember how long you would be in the night shelter?
Amy: Oh about 6 hours. Used to go and sleep in there about 10 o’clock at night and maybe the all clear would sound about 4 the next morning.
Ina: Sometimes it depended on how bad the air raid was as to how long you had to stay in the shelter. Some nights you did not go in at all.
