Part 2

School children interviewing Evelyn Maclean, Isobelle Simm and Jean Gibson about life during the war.[part 1]
What are you memories of WW2?

The Blackout, you had to carry a torch and shine it on the ground.
Blackout Curtains…There were air-raid wardens and they went about putting out lights

What school did you go to during WW2?

I went to Victoria Road School then I went to Torry Intermediate which is Torry Academy now.We were all teenagersI went to Frederick Street school-----and we had to go underground there (during air raids)I remember the time that Victoria Road School got bombed. Once the siren went we ran down Mansfield Road. We thought it was great. The soldiers were billeted at the Torry Battery… We were stupid going down (with the excitement same, as you would have done)… and we actually heard the bullets landing in the street.

Did you have a favourite song in the war?

Oh yes plenty of songs! I’ve got a tape of them a tape with all the old songs. I suppose you’ve heard all these songs.
We’re going to hang out our washing on the Sigfrid Line. You’ve never heard these songs before? When the war started that was the kind of songs we sang. Bless ‘em all. When you wish upon a star. Run Rabbit Run. I thought you boys would have heard all these songs, Oh Aye.

I don’t suppose you’ve ever heard of Vera Lynn. She’s in her 80’s nowadays but she was a famous singer in them days the forces sweetheart.

Did any of your family have to fight in the war?

Oh Yes!…My two brothers!
My husband…he was called up. He was in the TA’s so he was called up.
