Part 1

School children interviewing Evelyn Maclean, Isobelle Simm and Jean Gibson about life during the war [part 2]

Did you know anyone who was killed in the war?

Every night when you opened the paper there was always a name that you knew. Someone who had been taken prisoner or killed
My husband’s nephew was killed in the war he cheated his age. He said he was 19 and he was only 17. His brother was there too. They were James and John, his Mum got a letter from the war office saying J Forbes had been killed and she didnae know which one. She had to go to the war office andm find out. In these days you didn’t get to see their graves. She didn’t know where he was killed or nothing.

Were you scared?

I was on the buses during the war, corporation and I used to say to the driver, rush over the Victoria Bridge in case a bomb hits it. They were looking for the docks of course.

Did any planes crash?

One plane was taken down at the ice rink at Garthdee.

What did it feel like in the war? Was it scary?

When the sirens went Oh Yes. It was a real scary time----you know. We were crouched behind the bed in case bullets came in the window.
Other times we had a good time when all the soldiers were here and we went to the dances. I hope you boys don’t have to live through a war because it would be a worse war. I hope you don’t have to experience that.

Was there a main air raid shelter that you all went to?

No we all had our own-----In the basement of the tenement

How did you celebrate at the end of the war?

When the war ended everybody gathered at the Torry Battery for a celebration.
