On the 17 January 2005 Their
Past Your Future Scotland was officially launched in Clydebank Town
Hall. The event included a commomerative tea dance accompanied by a
big band and Wurlitzer organ. This page provides photographs from the
event and extracts from the official press release.
Their Past Your Future Scotland is an
exciting new initiative led by the Scottish
Museums Council (SMC),
bringing generations across Scotland together throughout 2005. Commemorating
the sixtieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War, this Big
Lottery Funded Project explores how
the war changed the people and the landscape of our country forever,
looking at the legacy that lives on in our towns and cities, and in
our education, social and health services. Their Past Your Future Scotland
is delivered by a Scottish Consortium, which is led by SMC in partnership
with the Scottish
Library and Information Council and
Learning and
Teaching Scotland.

| On behalf of the Scottish Consortium,
Joanne Orr, Director of the Scottish Museums Council, said: ‘Their
Past Your Future Scotland has taken a year to develop, and will be one
of the biggest cultural projects to take place in Scotland throughout
2005. It is a unique venture that will attract people from all walks
of life across the country, and we are looking forward to seeing generations
come together to commemorate the Second World War, celebrate their community’s
identities and learn from their past.’ |

As part of a £10
million pound UK-wide scheme funded by the Big Lottery Fund, six
areas around Scotland will be hosting Their Past Your Future Scotland.
The project will give communities in smaller towns and more remote
areas the opportunity to participate in a pioneering cultural programme.
Communities in these areas will be able to visit a brand new state-of-the-art
Touring Exhibition straight from the Imperial
War Museum in London, and participate
in individually tailored year-long Regional Events Programmes. In
addition, Their Past Your Future Scotland also has a unique e-learning
strand called War Detectives, which will encourage children around
Scotland to discover more about how the Second World War affected
their local areas, with the ultimate aim of creating an online learning
resource.
David Campbell, Big Lottery Fund Scotland
Board Member, said: “Their Past Your Future Scotland is a
unique opportunity for young people to learn valuable lessons and
to appreciate the sacrifices made by so many men and woman during
the Second World War. By linking generations, the programme will
allow people of all ages to hear first-hand the moving and courageous
stories of the WWII generation. The Big Lottery Fund is proud to
be funding a range of educational activities through this programme
providing a lasting legacy to the memory of our wartime heroes.”
The first area to host Their Past Your Future
Scotland will be West Dunbartonshire. Clydebank Town Hall, which
was one of the few buildings to remain standing following the infamous
Clydebank Blitz in 1941, will play host to the Touring Exhibition.

and tell the story of the Second World War in their local area. The
following organisations have been awarded grants of £4,000 -
£10,000 to develop War Detectives projects with children. A further
