03/10/2005- West Dunbartonshire Primary School Children Become Evacuees
St Michael’s Primary School in Dumbarton was one of three schools to become a WW2 classroom for the day. Local veterans and actors in period costume including a British airman, 1940s schoolteacher, the ‘lady of the manor’ and American paratroopers worked with the children to set the war within a context of childhood and everyday life. The initiative was designed to give the children an emotional experience of what it was like to be a child during the war. Activities included a simulated air raid, and an simulated ‘evacuation’ to the countryside.
